In 2026, GCI’s Member Trip will return to the San Juan River with Holiday River Expeditions.
This 5-day Upper and Lower San Juan trip launches near Bluff, UT on June 11th, 2026 and passes through Comb Ridge and the Goosenecks of the San Juan before taking out on June 15th at Clay Hills.
Along the way, the San Juan’s rich human history is evident, including 100-year-old Ute and Diné petroglyphs, the River House cliff dwellings, and thousand-year-old images from ancestral Puebloan people. Towards the end of the trip, the impact of Lake Powell reservoir on the San Juan also becomes clear as the river flows on top of excess deposited sediment, covering rapids with as much as 40 feet of sediment.
On this trip, we will be joined by special guest Morgan Sjogren, author of Path of Light: A Walk Through Colliding Legacies of Glen Canyon (Torrey House Press 2023). Path of Light is a 2025 Utah Book Award Winner and Library of Congress “Great Reads from Great Places” selection. Sjogren writes about Western lands and water through the lens of history, culture, science, and adventure. She will bring to this trip a deeply personal sense of care for Glen Canyon and a wealth of knowledge about early efforts to protect the Colorado River.
Before the trip, grab a copy of Path of Light from the GCI bookstore!
