Over the last two years, Glen Canyon Institute has worked closely with Good Intentions Paving Co. directors Will Buckley and Diego Riley to create What the River Knows, a new documentary film exploring the reemergence of Glen Canyon from the receding waters of Lake Powell reservoir.

As over-consumption and climate change force a reckoning of Colorado River policy, we are presented with the opportunity to restore one of the most stunning landscapes on the planet. What the River Knows examines this unique inflection point in a centuries-long history, weaving together past and present to reveal a new way forward for the Colorado River.

We could not be more excited to share this film and the story of Glen Canyon with you all.

Zak Podmore and Eric Balken walk through Glen Canyon’s restoration zone.
Musicians Peter McLaughlin, Jackson Emmer, and Chris Brashear in Cathedral in the Desert.

This screening will open with a documentary short from Running Dry, an Outside TV series focused on the lowest section of the San Juan River directed by Dr. Len Necefer. Transformed by Lake Powell reservoir inundation, this landscape raises important questions about the complex physical and ecological changes reshaping it.

The evening will include a panel discussion with:

  • Meg Flynn, Co-Founder of Returning Rapids Project
  • Jack Schmidt, Program Director of the Center for Colorado River Studies
  • Len Necefer, Filmmaker and Founder of Natives Outdoors

The panel will be moderated by GCI’s Eric Balken with audience Q+A to follow.
